Is Your Subfloor Ready for New Hardwood?

Your hardwood flooring is only as stable as the surface beneath it. Before a single plank is laid, our team evaluates your subfloor. If your home has suffered from previous water damage, settling, or poor initial construction, we’ll need to address your subfloor first. We’ll look for the following before your installation:

• Flat is a must: Hardwood requires strict flatness tolerances (typically within 3/16" over a 10-foot radius). We use straightedges to find high spots that need sanding and low spots that require self-leveling compounds.
• Moisture testing failures: We use professional-grade moisture meters to test your subfloor. If the moisture differential between the subfloor and the new hardwood is greater than 2% to 4%, we’ll remediate the source or apply a vapor barrier.
• Squeaks and noise: Squeaks mean loose subflooring. We walk every square inch of the room, screwing down loose plywood to the joists to eliminate vertical movement and noise before installing your hardwood. 

Preparing for Your Hardwood Installation

A successful hardwood installation requires clear communication and thorough job site preparation. Before our crew gets started, there are a few things that need to happen:

• Decide on baseboards: If you’re keeping your old baseboards, we’ll carefully remove them or plan on adding matching ones. 
• Dust barriers: We’ll establish heavy-duty plastic dust barriers across doorways and seal off HVAC vents in the work zone to protect the rest of your home from dust. 
• Clear the workspace: All furniture, electronics, and breakables must be moved out of the work area. We also ask that appliances be disconnected and moved prior to our arrival.

What to Expect During Your Hardwood Installation

On the day of your hardwood installation, we’ll start out by conducting a final check of the room's humidity levels and subfloor readiness. Next, we snap control lines to ensure the floor runs perfectly straight, taking into account the sightlines of your home and the direction of the floor joists.

Whether nailing down solid tongue-and-groove or floating a high-end engineered plank, our installers use industry-leading fasteners and adhesives, maintaining perfect staggering of end-joints for structural integrity and visual balance. Next, we install transition strips, T-moldings, and reinstall your baseboards. Finally, we vacuum the space, remove all project debris, and walk the floor with you.
